c. 1900 French Sarreguemines Panels
Sometimes a set of tiles come into the workshop that just stop you in your tracks. Such was the case with these exquisite panels depicting courtship scenes from c. 1900. We believe them to be from the noted French manufacturer Sarreguemines.
These three monumental tile panels, each measuring an extraordinary 63 by 31 inches, depict elegant courtship scenes set within idyllic gardens. The figures are dressed in the Regency style—high-waisted gowns, tailored coats, and graceful silhouettes that evoke the world of Jane Austen and the romantic ideals of another age.
The artistry extends well beyond the imagery. The glaze has developed an impeccable, even crazing across its surface, the kind of age that cannot be manufactured or hurried along. It softens the scenes, lending the warmth and depth that only a century can provide. The palette is equally captivating—lush greens, gentle blues, and earthy browns that still feel remarkably fresh, as though the gardens themselves have been preserved in ceramic.
And then there’s their provenance.
These panels came from the collection of legendary music executive Seymour Stein, the co-founder of Sire Records and the man who famously signed Madonna in the early days of her career. Stein had a renowned eye for discovery, whether in music or in the objects with which he chose to surround himself. It seems fitting that these panels, which tell a story of romance and possibility, once belonged to someone whose career was built on recognizing enduring talent.
More than a century after they were made, and after passing through the hands of one of popular culture's great tastemakers, these panels are ready for their next great adventure. Reach out to learn more.
